Small Choices
Earlier I had a lot on my mind so I felt I should take a walk, it would help me think. After a bit I found myself waiting at a crosswalk. There were cars coming nonstop from both directions and although I was visible and clearly was waiting to cross not one driver bothered to stop. So I waited. 8 or 9, 9 or 10 cars passed, I don’t know how many exactly; I was thinking about something else and not really paying attention. Then one of the drivers on my side of the road slowed to a stop just in front of the crosswalk. Immediately after the first stopped another driver on the opposite side of the road also slowed to let me pass.
It may just have been because of my perspective at the time, but I saw something in that simple act of a driver stopping when no one else would, and then the second driver who followed suite. I know that a little thing such as stopping for a pedestrian may seem like such a little thing, and I’m not saying that it’s not, but isn’t this similar to how greater acts are achieved? Maybe I’m crazy but isn’t this how changes are made in the world? By individuals choosing to do something when no one else would?
I don't know.
