Sinking Sun
You sit quietly staring out towards the horizon. You ignore the wind that ruffles your hair; there are more important things to concentrate on. You curl your toes, feeling the moist sand meld itself to your flesh. A gull cries from up above and you jump as it breaks your concentration, distracting you from your thoughts.
Turning your attention to the bird, you stare for a while; marveling at its grace, its freedom, in flight. Soon though the bird is lost in the dimming light and you return your attention to the sea in front of you. The sun glitters off of the water. Each ripple marring the mirrored surface lights up; a burning fragment of the sun reflected on top of the water. A chaotic myriad of dazzling lights.
You've been sitting on the beach for quite some time now, long enough for the sun to have sunk from almost directly overhead to where it is now, just a little above the water on the far horizon. You've been here too long you think. But you'll just stay a moment longer. Always just a little longer.
A wave comes in and you watch it move up the beach, an embodiment of strength crashing towards you. Yet the closer it comes, the smaller it grows and in the end all that reaches you is a gentle flow of water, softly lapping at your feet. A chilled embrace.
You shiver as the frigid water touches your skin. Yet you almost enjoy the feeling. It holds special meaning for you, it reminds you of something. After a moment the water recedes, and with it goes the cold; and the memories.
You take a deep breath, inhaling the clean ocean air; smelling the brine on the wind. It brings comfort and calm. Feeling slightly more at ease you lay back, close your eyes and try to organize your thoughts. Your heart quiets, slows, and you begin to feel drowsy.
There are so many different people all with different agendas. Each one with different hopes and ideals. All of them clamoring for your attention. Sometimes it was nice to just sit and think. Nice to get away from it all. Escape the pressure.
A bird cries from up above again, once more jarring you fully awake, but your eyes remain closed. It reflected your inner thoughts.
Just like that something could happen and you could be jarred, shaken, knocked down.
You smile, as a thought occurs to you. As a memory resurfaces. And you know. Know that there will always be at least one person who will help you up. They will always be there for you. How do you know this? Because of their actions or because they said so. Because they have proven themselves to you.
In the end it matters little how you know. But you do know.
As the chill of night begins to set in you rise from the hollow you've created in the sand and you look up at the stars. They're are as jewels glittering in the sky; they are something special , valuable. You smile and walk away. It was time to leave.
