Reavers: Defeat

Freya's teeth showed as she slammed round after round into Sellsword's shields. His reaver was still reeling from a recent barrage from the heavy cannons she'd ordered setup in the woods nearby the command center. She'd managed to maneuver him into their range once but she doubted she'd manage again. Sellsword was good in a reaver, almost as good as she was.

She loved to pilot the reavers; unfortunately she had proven to be one of the best commanders of her year. As result the instructors tended to give her a command position, rather than a position in the field. Most of the time she didn’t mind, but it would be nice to sometimes get a field position. She missed being part of the action.

Even now she shouldn’t, technically, be in a reaver. It wasn't her job to be in the field, although neither was it strictly prohibited. She just couldn’t resist.

"More reavers just appeared on screen," crackled Scarecrow on the comm, "It looks like the surviving members of the assault team have caught up."

"Tell the heavy cannons they can fire at will; also make sure all of our outlying positions are called back in. If their paths happen to cross with those incoming reavers I want them to do what they can to slow them down. If we're going to win this then we'll need all the help we can get."

"It will be done Commander."

Sellsword's shoulder cannon began to pound her shields once more; her brief respite was at an end. Her power levels were getting dangerously low and each impact she felt more and more. When the other reavers showed up this would be finished and her team would be defeated. Some might say she'd already been defeated but she wasn't one to lose quietly. She would go down fighting, even in a battle simulation. Perhaps especially in a battle simulation she wouldn’t let them take her out easily.

Sellsword's reaver was beginning to run low on power as well. According to her sensors he was under twenty-five percent shields. With a grim smile she kept chipping away at his power reserves. She kept him under a constant barrage of weapons fire and tried to maneuver him back into range of her heavy cannons. He was proving difficult to maneuver however, clearly he could see what she was trying to do and would have none of it.

Sensors on her reaver picked up two energy signatures behind her and she spun away from Sellsword in time to see the other two reavers step free from the surrounding forest. It only took moments for them to disable her reaver. The combined impact from their three cannons was far too much for her already depleted reaver to handle. She barely had time to loosen herself from her buckles and leap free before the reaver "detonated". Or in the case of the simulation before all the controls shut down and she was trapped in the operator’s seat.

As the three reavers turned to face her command center the lights in the artificial sky shifted green and the return call began to play over the comm system.

Together all the cadets began to troop back to the debriefing area.

It was over. For the first time in many weeks her side had lost.
