A Crystalline Skin

The light from the solitary lamp in the room glittered against the nearby window. Even with the lamp’s glow the room is dark, many of its features are covered with deep shadows. Moments ago the room had been alive with laughter, the shimmering lights had danced, and the sun had gleamed through the window, warming the mood.

But now the sun had set and the people had left to seek entertainment elsewhere. This had left the room dark and almost dead. Somehow when they had gone through shutting off the lights, turning off the television, the sound system, and other electronics they had missed that one lamp. So now it sat quietly in its corner, the light from its incandescent bulb creating a cheery orange glow against the window.

The world outside was white. Somehow even in the darkness the snow seemed to shine. From the sky above the crystalline flakes continued to fall, adding to the already thick blanket on the ground. However some of those snowflakes never reached the ground, instead they blew into the window where they joined the others adorning the glass.

The light from inside illuminated the snowflakes, creating an elaborate design on the surface of the glass. This crystalline skin of the window was breathtaking in the lamp’s soft orange glow, and yet no one remained to see it.

They were all off seeking glamour, beauty and excitement.

They would never know what they missed.
